Daydreaming Pavilion
concept and completion: 2025
service: unconventional assignment
temporality: hours
Every part of the urban environment we inhabit was, before taking material form, first conceived as an idea. Many architectural and urban solutions that we now regard as ordinary were once radical and ambitious visions, responding to the needs of their time or to new inventions. And of course, they also reflected the interests of particular individuals and ideologies. Yet while times and needs change, these solutions often remain fixed. What may appear as something that has “always been here” in fact had its own origin, purpose, and agenda – created by someone, for someone.
Today, the shaping of cities and public space is no longer exclusively in the hands of authorities or institutions making top-down decisions for thousands of people. In a democratic society, where every individual carries not only responsibility but also a voice, people and communities can take part in creating space. Even if this participation comes “from below,” as a temporary test or experiment, it still opens up possibilities. Residents hold great potential and power to reshape the environment they live in, especially when they come together.
The Daydreaming Pavilion was created with this in mind. It is a place where individuals or small groups can reconnect with their visions and dreams – to imagine what once seemed unimaginable. It is a setting for focus and for generating ideas towards a fairer society, one that may even extend beyond the human sphere. The pavilion’s compact, lightweight, and easily transportable form allows it to be placed both indoors and outdoors, offering different atmospheres and configurations that inspire new perspectives each time. Its visual design was co-created with residents of the Dainava housing estate in Kaunas, Lithuania.
As part of the closing celebration, participants designed and created the “Spoons of Friendship,” which served as a unique way to experience a communal dinner together.
