Play Brno
project: 2018
completion: 2024
service: architectural desig
temporality: decades
The preparation of certain types of architecture - especially those envisioned to function for decades - takes a significant amount of time. We began working on this project in 2018, in collaboration with the architectural studio ORA, after being invited by Kateřina Šedá to participate in the Brnox II project. The public space in front of the Pohoda hostel is owned by the city, which decided to revitalize it along with two other small public areas in Brno.
I consider myself very fortunate to have had the opportunity to design two public spaces (Pečky and Brno) right after finishing school. This type of assignment is something I find truly meaningful and enjoyable. Public space is inherently shared and accessible to the whole society—unlike often exclusive private commissions. In the case of the space in front of the hostel, we navigated the process largely intuitively. Looking back, I would now involve sociologists from the very beginning. Our approach was centered on connecting people—both passersby and residents—through play. We gradually adjusted the number and forms of play elements while also transforming the site into an outdoor living room—an extension of living space for those who, unfortunately, have not been granted the same privileges as others and are forced to live in inadequate conditions.
Since its opening, I have visited the site several times, and I am delighted to see that the local community has embraced it immediately. The photos by photographic studio BoysPlayNice were taken during a scorching summer day, so it might not be obvious, but in the afternoons and evenings, the place is bustling with activity.
